The 41-year-old man, who was attached to the Hawks unit in Kathu, was nabbed while on duty in Upington on Thursday.

In 2021 the captain submitted and recommended an informer’s reward claim of R100 000.

The police claim committee approved a payment of R80 000 to the benefit of what turned out to be a bogus police informer.

The captain also only paid the informer R5000, and another R5000 to a police sergeant stationed at Kuruman, and kept the remaining R70 000 for himself.

Hawks spokesperson Tebogo Thebe says the 42-year-old sergeant and 37-year-old informer have also been charged.

"A probe by the Hawks revealed that the informer’s reward claim was fraudulent. The so-called informer, allegedly recruited by the sergeant, was also charged for defeating the ends of justice connected to the main charge.”

The suspects are expected to appear in the Kuruman Magistrate's Court on Thursday on charges of fraud and corruption and defeating the ends of justice.
