Hawks confirm probe into Manuel
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
The Hawks have requested former finance minister Trevor Manuel to submit an affidavit.
The priority crimes unit received new directives from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) with regards to the investigation in an alleged SARS rogue unit.
Hawks Spokesperson Brigadier Hangweni Mulaudzi spoke to JacarandaFM News. He confirmed that Manuel and his deputy Jabu Moleketi were served with court papers requesting them to provide the affidavits.
"There are allegations that the pair have been summoned to appear somewhere. We don't know where this is coming from. We are sure that Manuel and Moleketi will respond to this request we have made," Mulaudzi said.
Mulaudzi has denied that the Hawks are not investigating former finance minister Pravin Gordhan.
"He is not part and parcel of this investigation, that chapter has passed. People must not release misleading statements."
Mulaudzi could not confirm or deny reports that private prosecutor Gerrie Nel is implicated in this new investigation.
Business Day reported that the investigation relates to "Project Sunday Evenings" - which featured heavily in the KPMG report into Sars' so-called rogue unit.
