Hawks: Multitude arrests, convictions through Fusion Centre
Updated | By Mmapaballo Borotho
Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya says a number of arrests and convictions of people involved in money laundering, corruption and fraud were secured through the Fusion Centre.
Lebeya was briefing the media on the successes and achievements of the Fusion Centre since its establishment in 2020.
The Fusion Centre is an operational hub that is meant to address priority financial crimes, including corruption.
He said the arrests and convictions secured are proof that the government's investment in fighting financial crime is coming to fruition.
"The Fushion Centre follows an intelligence-driven approach in investigating corruption, and it uses comprehensive data and information analysis; it also fast tracks and expedites the processing of cases, reducing delays."
He adds that through the fusion centre, at least 43 entities were convicted for various crimes, including corruption, fraud and tax invasion.
It also managed to investigate 556 cases of money-related crimes.
To date, 48 cases are still pending before various South African courts.
