Hawks nab another ‘instigator’ of violence, looting

The suspect was arrested by the Hawks in Free State on Monday.


More than 300 people died during the violence and looting in the two provinces, which President Cyril Ramaphosa has described as an insurrection.


Over 1000 people have been arrested for looting and damage to property.


About a month ago, National Police Commissioner Khehla Sitole told Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police that 11 suspected instigators were behind bars.


Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale says the latest suspect will face charges of public violence.


“The team managed to trace one of the alleged instigators in the recent violent protests, looting of businesses and destruction of infrastructure, ensured the apprehension of the 40 years old suspect.  During the search on his body and his car, some exhibits were found.


“The suspect will answer to charges relating to incitement to commit public violence.”
