The community of Verulam in KwaZulu-Natal reacted with shock and anger, after the news that three men stormed into the mosque and stabbed three men shortly after their prayers on Thursday afternoon.

A manhunt has been launched for the three suspects who slit the throat of one of the Islamic leaders and cut open the stomach of another man.

One worshipper died of his injuries, while the other two remain in a critical condition in hospital.

According to provincial police spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala, the docket has been handed over to the Hawks who will continue the investigations.

Authorities are also investigating a case of arson, after the library in the Mosque was set alight.

"This kind of attack on three innocent people is totally unjustified. We want our communities to live in harmony, practising their religions without fear," was the response of chairperson of Parliament's portfolio committee on police, Francois Beukman.

The South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) also reacted to the incident condemning it, and asking for law enforcement officials to prioritise the investigations.
