A roof structure collapsed at of the entrances to the hospital late on Thursday, injuring at least 5 people.

The Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi, as well as the Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure Development, Jacob Mamabolo visited the hospital on Thursday, saying the exact cause of the collapse will be investigated.

"We will do what we have to in establishing who was at fault and those people must be held accountable," Mamabolo said.

Ramokgopa was appointed as Health MEC after Qedani Mahlangu resigned following the Life Esidimeni scandal.

"I came here to check how the mop-up operations went. I discovered that all the services are functional and no patient was unduly affected by this," Ramokgopa says.

She adds that hospital staff were anxious after yesterday's incident but that morale has improved this morning.

"We have not yet calculated the cost of the damage that was caused but we have set aside a budget of R60 million for renovations and maintenance at the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in this financial year," she says.

Ramokgopa says the department will add money to the budget if the need arises.

"The hospital is fully functional, despite what had happened," she says.
