Hearing on Oscar Pistorius parole set down for next week
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
The Department of Correctional Services’ parole board is expected to convene next week Friday to consider the possibility of placing Oscar Pistorius on parole.
Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine’s Day in 2013.
The latest parole hearing follows a Constitutional Court ruling confirming Pistorius is eligible for parole.
Pistorius was sentenced to 13 years and 5 months for Steenkamp’s murder.
In March, Pistorius made an application for parole, but it was denied after the Supreme Court of Appeal issued a communication to the effect that he would only become eligible for parole in August 2024.
The disgraced Paralympian’s lawyer, Conrad Dormehl, said on Friday that they received a letter from the Correctional Services.
“Formal correspondence has been directed to our offices by the Department of Correctional Services. Such correspondence states that the parole board have convened a sitting for purposes of the consideration of Mr Pistorius’ placement on parole. This date has been set for 24 November 2023, in other words, next week Friday.”
