Heatwave to give way to potential thunderstorms – SAWS
Updated | By Lebohang Ndashe
South Africans should brace themselves for afternoon thunderstorms in the wake of the heatwave.
The South Africa Weather Service said temperatures are expected to decrease from warm categories to 60% chances of showers and thundershowers.
Weather forecaster Tokelo Chilane said this is due to summer systems, which are positioning themselves into afternoons and summer thunderstorms.
“The dominant weather systems from Monday onwards will be a surface trough situated over the central interior together with an upper air through which will be over the western parts of the country, but as it moves from west to east, it will be causing disturbances over the eastern and southern interior, resulting in isolated showers (30%) to scattered rain showers and thundershowers (60%).
“Affected provinces will be the Free State, North West, Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.”
The SAWS issued a warning last week about a heatwave in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and the Free State, except for the western and southern parts and the eastern parts of the North West.
The forecasted three days of persistently high temperatures begin on Saturday and are expected to end on Monday.
Chilone said the current heatwave may extend to Tuesday over north eastern parts of the country.
