21-year-old Van Breda made his first appearance in the Stellenbosch Magistrate's Court this morning after handing himself over to police yesterday afternoon.

The court today heard that the accused's first phone call after the incident was to his girlfriend before phoning emergency services three hours later.

While van Breda has been granted bail of R100 000 - it comes with strict conditions including that he cannot travel outside of the Western Cape and that he turn in his passport.

The NPA's Eric Ntabazalila explains why it took so long to make an arrest.

"Yes, we do understand that some people might be concerned that it took so long but at the same time we would have been in trouble with the same people if we took the case to court and it gets kicked out of court," he said.

Ntabazalila says blood found on Van Breda's clothes came from the victims.
