HPCSA clamps down on bogus doctors
Updated | By Nathan Daniels
The Health Professions Council (HPCSA) says it has opened 138 criminal cases against people falsely presenting themselves as doctors.
The HPCSA's Eric Mphaphuli says they have received 400 complaints. Out of these, 138 criminal cases have been opened and 38 people have been arrested for practicing as medical doctors without the necessary licence.
"The inspectorate office is continuously working to maintain the HPCSA mandate of protecting the public and guiding the professions. We ensure that all practisers are registered to practice. But the community must also be vigilant that some 'doctors' operate in shady places," says Mphaphuli.
Earlier today the council and police nabbed a bogus doctor in Ga-Rankuwa, north of Pretoria.
"He will be charged for contravening the Health Professions Act for practising illegally, while not registred with the NPCSA," says Mphaphuli.
