HPCSA working to ensure registration of UFH speech therapy students

The Health Professions Council of South Africa says it’s working on various interventions with the University of Fort Hare to ensure that the 2021 and 2022 Speech Therapy students are registered with the council.
The University of Fort Hare introduced the four-year speech-language therapy qualification in its Health Sciences Department in 2018.
After studying for four years, about 100 University of Fort Hare students discovered their speech therapy qualification might not be worth the paper it was written on.
Speech Therapy students from the university who completed their studies in 2022 and 2023 have not yet graduated because the HPCSA does not recognise their qualifications.
This means they can't register for community service to seek job placements in their chosen profession.
The council had confirmed that they were aware of the issue.
Chairperson of the Speech, Language and Hearing Board Lebogang Ramma says the university must sort out all the concerns raised by the Health Professions Council.
"We have been working with the university, and there have been a few interventions that we have worked on for the 2021 and 2022 cohort. they went through an integration program that started in June last year, and they were assessed in December.
"We are waiting for the relevant paperwork from that assessment to be submitted to us so that we can sit and decide if those students are registerable or not."
