Police, Human Rights Commission probe rape at Mahikeng school
Updated | By Lindiwe Mpanza
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says it is deeply concerned at incidents of sexual abuse in schools.
The commission’s chair, Bongani Majola, visited Curro Academy in Mahikeng on Friday following reports that a 9-year-old boy was raped at the school.
Majola says the commission met with the head of the school who confirmed that a complaint has been laid by one of the parents.
The school is in discussion with the parents of the child and are offering psychological support.
Majola says the commission will keep an eye on the ongoing investigations by the school and the police.
"What we heard was that the police have taken footage from the school, and I assume the police will be analysing that and giving us further information.”
The provincial police spokesperson in North West, Adele Myburgh, a case of rape was opened on February 14.
"Our investigation currently show that this nine year old was waiting outside the school for his transport that needed to take him home. While he was still waiting for the transport to arrive, he was grabbed by an unknown suspect who dragged him into a bathroom, where he was then allegedly raped.”
