Gauteng Premier David Makhura led a wreath laying ceremony at the Sharpeville Memorial at the Pelindaba Cemetery in remembrance of the 69 people who were shot and killed on this day in 1960.

This was followed by an anti-racism march to the cricket pitch.

As part of the commemoration, 69 white South Africans also gathered in remembrance of the 69 protesters who were shot and killed in the Sharpeville Massacre 56 years ago.
