Icy roads disrupt traffic in Joburg
Updated | By Karabo Tebele
The icy roads led to at least one crash in Johannesburg on Friday morning.
Gauteng experienced bitterly cold weather on Friday morning with a large cold front which moved from the coastal areas over the rest of the country.
The Johannesburg metro police says some streets in Hillbrow in the inner city were covered in ice.
"Smith street between Kem and Nugget street has closed off due to 1 cm of ice on the roadway and vehicles are unable to break," says spokesperson Xolani Fihla.
"One lane is closed, and vehicles are diverted into the bus lane, other affected areas are Nugget and Wolmarans and other parts of the central businesses district.
"Officers are present to control and divert traffic and motorist are advised to reduce their speed and proceed with caution."
