The Eastern Cape Department of Transport says the identification of the deceased will start on Tuesday morning following Monday evening’s horror bus crash that killed 28 people.
The long-distance passenger bus was travelling from Cape Town to Mthatha when the driver lost control and it plunged down a steep embankment next to the N2 between Butterworth and East London on Monday afternoon.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation says the deceased include 20 females, 5 males and three children.
“6 persons were seriously injured and transported to Frere Hospital. 18 persons sustained no injuries. The co-driver did not sustain any injuries,”
Eastern Cape Transport Department spokesperson, Unathi Binqose says the wreckage will be used for the investigation.
“The wreckage of the bus has been retrieved and will also be a subject of interest for accident investigators. The next process now is the identification of the deceased and those in hospital, and that process commences this morning,” says Binqose.
Meanwhile, Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula, has sent his condolence to the families of the deceased.
“The loss of life is tragic and brings untold suffering to families who have lost breadwinners and loved ones. I convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and their loved ones. We must all continue to work together in making our roads safe and ensuring responsible driving,” said Mbalula in a statement.
He says the RTMC will release a report once the investigation has been concluded.
