IEC official issued court summons for tax evasion

A senior official at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will have to answer to a case of tax evasion next month after being charged for the contravention of income tax and value added tax.

According to the South African Revenue Services, the 57-year-old director failed to submit income tax return between 2016 and 2021.


It's understood SARS was unable to assess the suspect's financial status for the stated period.


The matter was reported to the Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation in Johannesburg for further investigation.


"On Monday, 14 March the investigation team served the suspect with a summons to appear in court," says Ndivhuwo Mulamu from the Hawks in Gauteng.


The woman is expected to appear at the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on 12 April.
