IEC to probe ANC election ‘war room’

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will investigate a Democratic Alliance (DA) complaint into African National Congress’ (ANC) alleged Bosasa-funded election "war room”.

It has been reported that the controversial facilities management company Bosasa set it for the ANC at its Krugersdorp headquarters over the past three elections.

The facilities are estimated to have cost R6 million.

These rooms are alleged to have been used by the ANC to campaign ahead of 2011, 2014 and 2016 elections and included a screen wall to track results, computers, cubicles with phones and 70 volunteers.

The IEC’s deputy chief electoral officer Masego Sheburi says the matter has been handed over to their legal team.

"Once we have received the independent evaluation the commission will review and decide on a proper course of action which may also include referal to the electoral court if it finds there is merit to the complaint."

The DA's Mmusi Maimane says they trust that the IEC will investigate with no prejudice.

"We trust the IEC will investigate without fear or favour, and await the outcome of such investigation.

We are of the view that the allegation that Bosasa  set up ANC election ‘war rooms’ at their Krugersdorp HQ over the past three elections - to the tune of R6 million – constitutes conduct that is in contravention of electoral code of conduct.

"We look forward to hearing back from the commission once the allegations have been investigated.”
