IEC records Tlokwe addresses
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has recorded 86% of voters' addresses in Tlokwe as was ordered by the Constitutional Court.
The court ruled the IEC had to update the voters roll in Tlokwe after various by-elections were declared invalid.
Addresses for some 4000 voters could not be verified by the IEC and the initial case against the IEC was brought by six independent candidates from Tlokwe in the North West.
The court case over contested by-elections in Tlokwe has revealed the possibility that the IEC may have misinterpreted its duty under the Electoral Act to obtain and record the addresses of registered voters.
Chief Electoral Officer Mosotho Moepya told a group of journalists in Centurion on Wednesday they are confident the local government elections in Tlokwe will run smoothly.
"We gave parties the breakdown of the extraordinary we have gone to in order to capture addresses for all voters in this municipalities. This included opening voting stations over two additional weekends to give registered voters a chance to provide their addresses," Moepya said.
