The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it is happy with the voting turnout during Wednesday's various by-elections.
A total of 40 by-elections were held in 25 municipalities across the country.
Most of the polls were held in Gauteng with a total of 106 contested wards.
The commission's CEO Sy Mamabolo says they will ensure people are able to cast their votes before 9 pm.
"There are no incidents, and we are happy at that because the party agents are playing their role accordingly, our staff are cooperating well with our voters as well with the security personnel who are deployed at various voting stations.
"No incident, all is going well, what is left is for us to ensure that everybody who has to vote gets the opportunity to vote before nine."
More than 370 000 people have registered to vote in the by-elections.
