IEC vows to fix BLF and FF+ mudslinging

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it only needs to deal with the substance of the Black First Land First (BLF) matter rather than correcting its procedural failures.

With just over a week to go until the May 8 elections – the IEC has vowed to address the political mudslinging between the BLF and the Freedom Front Plus.

The Electoral Court has ruled that the IEC was wrong to deny the Freedom Front Plus an opportunity to challenge the BLF's registration as a political party.

The IEC failed to gazette the party's registration - meaning interested parties couldn't object.

“Basically, the court order directs us to deal with the substance of the matter that was presented to us rather than dealing just dealing with the procedural aspects of it,” says the IEC’s Mawetho Mosery.

According to the Freedom Front Plus’ Pieter Groenewald the substance of the matter relates to the BLF’s constitution which they believe is discriminatory.

It states that only black citizens may join the party.

“In due course, having looked at it and having applied its mind to the substance of the matter – there will be a decision that will determine the way forward will be.”
