IFP will not enter into coalition with ANC

The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) held a media briefing on Sunday to chart the way forward ahead of coalition talks.

This as coalition talks get underway for the 21 hung councils in the province.

The IFP won most of the municipalities in the northern part of KwaZulu-Natal, while the ANC also failed to gain an outright majority in eThekwini.

The party’s president Velenkosini Hlabisa said the party is willing to talk to all parties, but will not form a coalition with the African National Congress (ANC).

“Let me be upfront, where we will govern as a leading party in KwaZulu-Natal, we will not enter into a coalition with the ANC. This for a simple reason, the ANC has not been honest with us in the past. They have let down the people of South Africa and the voters have expressed themselves in regards to the ANC.”

Hlabisa added the IFP has some non-negotiables when entering into any coalition agreement.

“I can already tell you we have two firm non-negotiables; we will not enter into any agreement with any party that advocates or supports racism neither will we enter any agreement with a party clouded by controversies of corruption and municipal mismanagement. Our aim is providing the best level of service possible and to do so with absolute integrity”

Meanwhile, IFP founder Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi said the election performance came as no surprise.

“All of you have seen the results and considered their meaning, the fact that the IFP gained 112 additional seats, clearly indicates the party is on an upward trajectory. But his is not surprising as in 2019 the IFP was placed in a strong upward trajectory after that we continued to win by-election after by-election. We were called the comeback kids.”

Buthelezi added the deterioration in the country’s governance and well-being has only served to emphasise the IFP as the champions of integrity.
