The embattled power utility was in Diepsloot, north of Johannesburg, on Tuesday to kickstart a new campaign to disconnect illegal power connections.

"We are losing millions in a day if I can just probably give an estimate - I'm not sure about here - but in Soweto, for example, we looking about R3 million we are losing a day in illegal operations that are happening in our townships," said Eskom’s Daphney Mokwena.

Mokwena revealed that some of the illegally-installed transformers in Diepsloot belonged to Eskom.

"Daily there are transformers that are missing in our networks, it is very difficult to trace them. However, when we see such operations like today we are able to identify them and trace them back to where they were removed from," she said.
