Illegal sand mining poses risk to KZN water supply

Water and Sanitation officials say KZN's water supply is under threat as a result of illegal sand mining.
The department has identified KZN as being among the three most affected provinces by this activity.
Spokesperson, Sputnik Ratau says this illegal mining is widespread and it's led to serious environmental issues and is widespread across the region.
"Illegal sand mining comprises of the mining of sand especially on the river bed - that is not authorised. It has a huge negative impact on water supply in a number of ways. Activities are primarily in the rivers of Illovu, Umzumbe, Umthwalume, Umvoti, Umfolozi, Umhlathuze and Umgeni," he says.
