Implats mine disaster: Names of the deceased released

The names of the thirteen miners who lost their lives last week at the Impala Platinum mine in Rustenburg have been released, the youngest of whom was 33 years old.

The names of the miners were released during the memorial service at Impala Rustenburg sports grounds on Wednesday.


 Among the dignitaries at the event are officials from the government, the Bafokeng  Royal family, local political leadership, and the majority union Amcu’s leadership.


Some of the mine survivors' are present at the memorial service.


The mine on Monday announced that the death toll had risen to thirteen after a miner succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Sunday.


The mineworkers were injured when the elevator used to bring the workers back up to the surface malfunctioned over a week ago.


More than 40 miners remain in hospital as victims of the Impala mine accident are being remembered in Rustenburg - where messages of support, hymns and prayers have been delivered.


They were among more than 70 injured in the 11 shaft accident that claimed 13 lives - bringing the number of deaths at the country’s mines this year to 54.


Five others are still in Intensive Care Units (ICU).


The miners that succumbed to their injuries are: Siyabulela Nzume, Eric Libada, Khayalethu Bekhamane, Marumo Shasha, Mandisi Nkulwana, Lethola Qeba, Mgcineni Dlabone, Mncedisi Hukwana Morena Mohlomi, Petrus Nare, Raselebedi Ntoi, Vuyani Dangazele - and Zwelethu Nomsuka.
