‘Incompetent’ Mkhwebane must not investigate Covid-19 looting - PSA

The Public Servants Association (PSA) says Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane should have no part in the investigations into Covid-19 looting.

Earlier this month Mkhwebane announced plans to probe alleged Covid-19 tender irregularities, including the so-called ambulance scooters saga in the Eastern Cape.

But the trade union believes Mkhwebane will only detract from the investigations.

“We are concerned about her capacity and her competency to deal with the Covid-19 corruption and hence we are saying we don’t foresee herself being able to investigate the corruption," says the PSA's Reuben Maleka.

“We are saying she must leave this process to the SIU (Special Investigating Unit) and the Hawks because as far as we know ultimately her reports and everything that will come out of the investigation will end up in unending process of court litigation and with no prospects of finding solutions. "

ConCourt dismisses Mkhwebane's bid to set aside damning Estina judgment

The Constitutional Court has dismissed her bid to appeal a high court judgment that set aside her Estina dairy farm report. The Democratic Alliance (DA) and Council for the Promotion of the South African Constitution (Casac) took the report on judicial review on the basis that the report ignored the role of senior politicians in the Free State.

Maleka says Mkhwebane’s tenure leaves little to be desired.

“The PP’s office is very weakened. At this point in time we don’t believe that the PP’s office has got any capacity.

“Her reputation is not one that can give us confidence,” says Maleka.

He adds the union is in full support of the motion by the Democratic Alliance (DA) to remove Mkhwebane from office.

“We are part of the process. We have written letters to the Speaker of Parliament, we want to give evidence as the union to support the call that she must be removed.”
