Updated | By JacarandaFM News / Press Statement
The South African government says none of its citizens have
so far been reported missing, following the power earth quake and devastating
tsunami in Indonesia.
The country was shaken by a 7.5 magnitude quake on Friday morning and hours later tsunami waves of up to 1.5 meters struck the city of Palu in central Sulawesi island.
By Saturday morning, the death toll has risen to more than 400, with rescue operations still underway.
The department of International Relations and Cooperation says in a statement officials from the South African embassy in Jakarta are in contact with authorities.
“The Government and people of South Africa wish to extend its sincere condolences to the Government and people of Indonesia,” reads the statement.
The Department has also urged family members of any South African who is residing or on holiday in Indonesia and whom they cannot contact or locate, to contact the Department’s 24-hour switchboard number at 012 351 1000.
