Inmate stabbed to death at Leeuwkop prison
Updated | By Thabo Tshabalala
One inmate has been stabbed to
death and another seriously injured at Leeuwkop Correctional Centre in
Johannesburg on Tuesday.
The Department of Correctional Services says the inmate died during an apparent gang-related riot in the Medium B prison.
The prisoner was reportedly stabbed in the neck and was declared dead on the scene.
The department’s Singabakho Nxumalo says the incident has been reported to the police, who have begun an investigation.
Nxumalo says the department has also launched its own internal probe to determine whether the incident was in fact gang-related.
He says all inmates should feel safe inside the country’s prisons.
“It’s an issue that has disturbed us quite greatly. No inmate should be in danger being inside our correctional facility hence we will do whatever it takes to get to the bottom of this.”
