Inquiry into FNB stampede called off

Two people were killed and more than 20 others injured in the stampede that occurred at the Soweto Derby.
The Department of Sport and Recreation has withdrawn the establishment of a Committee of Inquiry into the stampede at the FNB Stadium in July last year.

In a notice, Gazetted on Friday, minister Thokozile Xasa announced her decision to "withdraw such committee and its terms of reference to investigate the tragic events at the soccer match between Kaizer Chief and Orlando Pirates on 29 July 2017".

But the department's Thamie Mthembu says they will only explain the reasons for the decision on Monday.
"What would be best would be for us to speak through an official statement once all aspects have been taken into account," Mthembu told Jacaranda FM News by phone.
A day after the incident, the head of the South African Football Association (SAFA) called for a full-scale investigation into the matter.
Danny Jordaan said SAFA will ask for a full report on the incident.
