Ipid concerned at continuous info leaks from police

Police watchdog, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s (Ipid), says it is concerned about the continuous leakage of their investigation reports.
This comes after a report into circumstances that led to the murder of late Charl Kinnear was leaked before Ipid could provide feedback to the family.
Kinnear, who was an Anti-Gang Unit section commander, was gunned down in his car in front of his home in Bishop Lavis in September 2020.
The report has shown that the leakage of police information is porous in the Western Cape.
Spokesperson Grace Langa says Ipid conducted an investigation into “SAPS members’ failure to act on the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) reports and reasons that led to the murder of Charl Kinnear.”
Langa adds the final report and recommendations have been sent to the national police.
“It must however be noted that the investigation team has indicated in the investigation report that some of senior members of SAPS did not provide their full cooperation during the investigation which warrant further investigation. These further investigations are ongoing and all identified members will be taken through due process to ensure that the interest of Justice is served,” says Langa.
She says the leaking of information remains a huge concern.
“The continuous leakage of investigation reports does not only put the life of IPID investigators at risk but also compromise the work of the Directorate. Therefore, in order to restore the confidence of public on the work done by this independent institution, Ipid executive director has issued an instruction for an urgent appointment of a forensic investigation firm to investigate the circumstances surrounding the continuous leakage of the institution investigation reports before they can be made public.
"Ipid request to be given a space to focus on the investigation including providing feedback to the family.”
