Issue of unaccounted ANC ballots may still end up in court

Disgruntled African National Congress (ANC) delegates have sent the party a letter of demand in connection with the unaccounted ballots during voting for the Top 6 leadership.

A total of 68 ballots are affected.

Co-owner of Selepe Seleke Attorneys, Dexter Selepe, confirmed to Jacaranda FM News that they've been working frantically through the night to file an urgent application to challenge the party's election results.

''We are finalising our papers and we've sent letters of demand to account for the 68 unaccounted ballots be added because they are not missing.

''The ballots are there, they were put in an envelope, put aside and called a special vote because for some mysterious reasons, the delegates' names were not appearing on the voters roll.''

Selepe says the party’s response will determine whether the matter ends up in court.

The disgruntled ANC members challenging the party's elective conference results hail from KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo.

Out of the 68 uncounted votes, 19 are from Limpopo and the remaining 49 are from KwaZulu-Natal.

Selepe says if no solution is found, they'll file an urgent court application to challenge the party's elections.

''We are also hamstrung by internal processes of the ANC which seem to go on forever and there's no direct connection to the steering committee who can advise us accordingly as to whether they've taken a firm decision not to consider the 68 votes or whether we should go enforce the rights of the delegates as we are currently instructed''.

Meanwhile, the ANC spokesperson, Zizi Kodwa says the steering committee is expected to update delegates on the disputed votes of the Top 6 leadership daily.
