January sees steep increase in fuel prices
Updated | By Karabo Tebele
The Department of Energy says the price of both petrol and diesel will rise sharply in January.
The adjusted prices will take effect from Wednesday.
Motorists will pay between 40 and 43 cents a litre more for petrol.
The price of diesel will increase by between 54 and 55 cents a litre.
“Paraffin will increase by 74 cents a litre at retail level and LP Gas will decrease by 44 cents per kilogram,” the department’s spokesperson Robert Maake said on Monday.
Maake said the hikes are mostly due to an increase in international oil prices.
“On the other side, the rand strengthened against the US dollar and actually cushioned the motorists by around 15 cents a litre.”
