The incident happened on the eve of his release on parole.

The Constitutional Court ruled that the Polish immigrant who shot dead then-SACP leader Chris Hani in 1993 be released on parole by Wednesday, midnight.

Walus, 69, has served nearly three decades of a life sentence for the murder, which took South Africa to the brink of a race war as negotiations to end apartheid entered their final phase.

But his release was met with criticism from South Africans and various political parties.

Correctional Services spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo says a detailed report of the unfortunate stabbing incident will be released at a later stage.

"What can be stated at this point is that inmate Walus is stable and DCS healthcare officials are providing the necessary care,” he says.

“It is alleged that Walus was stabbed by another inmate from the same housing unit. Stabbing and other forms of disturbances are offences not warranted in a correctional environment and this case will be investigated," says Nxumalo.

The ANC in Gauteng declared Wednesday Chris Hani Day of Action.

The party and its alliance partners will march to Kgosi Mampuru Prison where Walus is set to be released.
