Mokgoro confirmed the news in a media briefing on Thursday morning.

He says he met with President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday where he made a commitment to leave office.

“Yesterday (Wednesday) I met the president and as I committed in the past few days. This morning I will submit my letter of resignation to the speaker of the North West provincial legislature as premier of the North West province,” said Mokgoro.

Mokgoro said he didn’t want to be forced out of office.

“The past few days I have listened to many political actors and observers commenting about my removal from office as the premier. I took a decision to refuse to leave office in stampede, forced out in haste for no reason.

“A hasty departure from the office would not have been in the interest of the people of the North West, nor would it have advanced the oath of office I have taken
