The City of Johannesburg will assist residents affected by a fire that swept through Alexandra on Thursday Afternoon.
At least 500 shacks were destroyed when the blaze ripped through the township, leaving 150 families with only the clothes on their backs.
The city’s MMC for Public Safety Micheal Sun says emergency services managed to extinguish the fire in the early hours of Friday morning.
No injuries or casualties were reported and most of the affected people have been relocated to a hall Alexandra.
“We will ensure that those affected will receive assistance and emergency shelters are being arranged by the disaster management unit.
"The city, together with its relief partners, will continue to provide food, blankets, hygiene packs and other materials in order to assist the victims of this devastating fire,” says Sun.
Sun has appealed to the public to assist with food, blankets and clothes which they can drop off at the Sandton or Alexandra fire stations.
Different organisations have been assisting the city by providing food and blankets.
Trucks have also been arranged to help the families move their belongings to the hall.
