Joburg losing millions due to faulty speed cameras
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The Johannesburg Metro Police Department has confirmed that its traffic speed cameras have not been working for almost a year.
This means motorists who have been exceeding the prescribed speed limit and were not captured may be off the hook.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says the contract with the service provider ended on 31 May 2021.
"The City of Johannesburg has not been conducting speed enforcement due to not having a service provider to assist with speed equipment and processing of fines because of contractual obligations, the speed contract is evaluated and finalised so that operations can resume.
"The city is losing millions of rand due to not collecting revenue from speed fines and calculated before the contract ended the city used to make R3 million per month in revenue collected from speed fines."
