Joburg mayor Makhubo vows to rid Braamfontein of criminals
Johannesburg Mayor Geoff Makhubo has called on students and businesses in Braamfontein to work together with local law enforcement to strengthen the fight against crime.
He was speaking at the launch of a new anti-crime initiative in the Braamfontein area on Monday.
The Nelson Mandela Bridge has been identified as a hotspot, with robbers targeting pedestrians and students.
"We expect anyone from students, businesses, and everyone around Braamfontein to work together with the JMPD and other law enforcement agencies to ensure that we have an integrated approach to this crime-fighting at Mandela bridge, Braamfontein and inner-city," said Makhubo.
"We want to say to these criminals that what they are doing does in fact go beyond the individual students they attack.”
Makhubo said the city would be increasing the presence of metro police officers in the area.
"Our message to criminals terrorizing young people is this, by holding back young people they have declared themselves the enemies of progress. They have declared themselves agents of forces that want to stop young people and their families in their attempts to break the cycle of poverty.”
