Last week, City Power managed to spare its customers the dreadful rolling blackouts despite Eskom implementing stage 2 load shedding.

But on Monday, City Power lost the generating capacity at its Kelvin substation.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena says this is why they've had to make a sudden U-turn on their previous pledge not to cut power.

"At any given day, City Power receives electricity from two lines at Kelvin Power Station which contributes 10% of overall electricity, with the rest coming from Eskom," says Mangena.

"We have lost that line on Saturday night after the explosion there and we are left with one line and that cannot sustain the load that is needed to offset stage 2."

Mangena adds that they've reverted to using Eskom's schedule.

"We are currently load shedding and we will do so until Eskom tells us otherwise."

Struggling power utility Eskom has extended the rolling blackouts until at least Thursday due to a shortage of capacity.
