Residents of Johannesburg have been urged to participate in the process of renaming William Nicol to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Drive.
The process is expected to officially begin on 29 March and will run until Freedom Day.
Johannesburg Mayor Geoffrey Makhubo says the decision to rename the street to the struggle stalwart was made on her 84th birthday.

"This renaming of one of the City's iconic landmarks is a result of council's commitment to social transformation and cohesion. It symbolises the immeasurable commitment of Mama Winnie to the struggle for humanity and liberation of our country.”
Makhubo says the public engagement is an opportunity for residents to voice their opinions.
"Names carry history. They say something about those whose contributions are deemed worthy of a public and multigenerational memory.
"These are by their very nature contentious and that is why they must always be treated with the sensitivity they deserve."
