Joburg residents warned of unplanned power outages amid cold weather

The City of Johannesburg has warned residents of a possible increase in power outages amid the plummeting temperatures in Gauteng.

The utility has urged its consumers to use electricity sparingly, as the power system will be under severe strain.   


 "The Joburg electrical system will be prone to unplanned power outages as overloading and electricity demand increase in the cold weather conditions," says City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena.


Mangena gave an assurance that the city does have a plan to tackle the unplanned outages. 


"The key focus of the plan is to attend to those areas that experience repeated unplanned outages on the same day or week.


"City Power has also prioritized resources to address those areas where there are capacity challenges.”
