Joburg tiger found, euthanised after attacking animal
The female tiger Sheba escaped from her enclosure at Walker’s Fruit Farm, south of Johannesburg at the weekend, and was spotted via drone thermal imaging at a waterhole in the area on Tuesday.
The tiger had previously attacked a man and killed two animals.
The eight-year-old tiger then, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, also attacked and killed one of the domestic animals on the west side of the fruit farm.
Community Policing Forum (CPF) spokesperson Gresham Mandy says Sheba had to be euthanised after she had, through the night, moved away from where bait was set up for her.
"Sheba had moved during the night across the hills to the west side of Fruit Farm, bringing her close to livestock and others residents in a more densely populated area.
"Members responded to the scene and began to track the tiger. The owner of the tiger was present and she was located near one of the houses on the farm. Due to the terrain and area it was not possible to contain her or secure her safely.
"This location is two kilometeres from where the tiger Sheba was last known to be roaming. She had entered a farm area with six dwellings, with families living there. At 3:45 am the decision was made to euthanise her while it was still safe to do so. Unfortunately at that moment in time darting her was not an option."
