Mashaba reveals 'the true state of Joburg'
Updated | By Slindelo Masikane
Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba says for the first time the true state of the city has been revealed to residents.
Mashaba delivered his inaugural State of the City address. He took office nine months ago following the local government elections.
Mashaba says the Democratic Alliance (DA) inherited a city riddled with crime and corruption, a housing backlog, poor infrastructure and unemployment.
But he says his administration's pro-poor policies will lead to an improvement in service delivery and job creation.
"This is a plan that no longer places the poor on the fringes of society, but one that places them at the heart of our agenda.
"Looking at all these developments in line with our 10-point plan it is without doubt that day-by day and step-by-step, we are beginning to make real lasting progress in the City of Johannesburg," said Mashaba.
Today also saw the unveiling of the new council chamber, built at a cost of R360 million. Mashaba however believes the money should rather have gone towards improving the lives of the people of Joburg.
