Johannesburg has a new mayor
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo and Sibahle Motha
The African National Congress (ANC) is back at the helm in the City of Johannesburg with Geoff Makhubo elected as the new mayor on Thursday.
Last week, council speaker Vasco de Gama postponed proceedings due to what he described as a lack of clarity on the voting procedures in council.
Members of the council could not agree on what constitutes a majority vote when it comes to numbers in council, with most saying a majority is 50% + 1%.

Makhubo attained 137 of the votes.
The Democratic Alliance's (DA) Funzela Ngobeni received 101 votes while the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) - who fielded Musi Novela - received 30.
The election of new mayor follows Herman Mashaba's resignation in protest of the election of Helen Zille as the DA federal council chair.
