JSC votes in favour of John Hlophe impeachment
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) says it will uphold recommendations of the for Western Cape Judge President Justice John Hlophe to face impeachment.
This after the Judicial Conduct Tribunal unanimously found Hlophe guilty of gross misconduct in April.
Hlophe was accused of trying to influence Justices Chris Jafta and Bless Nkabinde in a corruption case relating to former president Jacob Zuma and arms company Thint in the multi-billion-rand arms deal.
The tribunal also found that Hlophe's conduct seriously threatened and interfered with the independence, impartiality, dignity and effectiveness of the Constitutional Court, effectively threatening public confidence in the judicial system.
At its meeting on Wednesday, the JSC took the decision to uphold the report and recommendations.
"In pursuance thereof and in terms of the provisions of the Constitution the matter will be referred to the National Assembly for its decision,” said JSC spokesperson Dali Mpofu in a statement.
“The National Assembly and the parties will be furnished with copies of both the majority and minority views.”
‘In line with the principles of natural justice the JSC has invited the parties to show cause why it should or should not advise the President to suspend Judge President Hlophe pending the finalisation of the matter by the National Assembly,” Mpofu added.
