Large groups of mostly women started gathering in the vicinity of the JSE in the early hours of Friday morning for a sit-in.

They are protesting the increase in gender-based violence and femicide.

Newton-King had initially refused to sign the memorandum as the crowd started booing her and refused to listen.

She added that the JSE does not represent business, it is merely the place where business is.

"I think that the pain that women are feeling in this country is palpable and I understand completely the desperation and need to be heard.

"The JSE does not represent business, the JSE it's the place where business is. Today we have committed to take the memorandum to business and out to them the need to respond."
