Judgement in Mcebo Dlamini bail application postponed
Wits student leader Vuyani Pambo has accused the magistrate handling the criminal case against fellow student leader Mcebo Dlamini of not taking the matter seriously.
A ruling on Dlamini's bail application is expected in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court tomorrow.
He is facing five charges including assault, theft and malicious damage to property.
Ahead of his court case, Dlamini told media that he was innocent of all charges and was glad he was the one being punished and not the other students.
Today's proceedings saw workers and students gathered outside the court, with placards in support of Dlamini.
The state prosecutor argued that Dlamini has shown a propensity for disobeying court orders and also misled the court when he said he had to write a test today.
An affidavit by the investigating officer says footage shows Dlamini punching a police officer, in what seemed like an attempt to evade arrest.
His lawyer Mongezi Ntanga refuted claims that Dlamini is a violent person, stating that his client has always advocated for peaceful protests.
Ntanga further stated that Dlamini was willing to abide by any bail conditions the court would wish to set for him. Being a law student and future officer of the court, Ntanga said Dlamini would not do anything to jeopardise his career.
Speaking to media outside court, student leader Vuyani Pambo said the courts were deliberately dragging their feet.
