Judgment reserved in battle over tourism relief fund
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
The High Court in Pretoria has reserved judgment in the urgent application by AfriForum and Solidarity over aspects of the Department of Tourism’s Covid-19 relief fund.
The two organisations are unhappy with the department’s use of broad-based black economic empowerment scores to determine eligibility for the R200 million in emergency funding.
AfriForum argued that, since every business in the tourism sector is adversely affected by the lockdown, they should all qualify for funding regardless of race.

The lobby group believes the department is guilty of discrimination on the grounds of race.
AfriForum CEO Kallie Kriel says the organisation is prepared to go all the way to the Constitutional Court if necessary.
Judgment is set to be handed down before the end of the week.
