Just over 600 new Covid-19 infections as state of disaster ends

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported 685 new COVID-19 cases on Monday – on the last day of the official lockdown.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Monday evening the lifting of the National State of Disaster, officially ending more than two years of these regulations which were aimed at containing the coronavirus outbreak.
While the president said South Africa is now entering a new phase of its fight against Covid-19, the daily positivity rate stood above the 5% mark.
The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) says 685 new COVID-19 cases that have been identified in the past 24 hours leading to Monday.

“This brings total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3 667 560, which represents increase represents a 5.4% positivity rate,” reads the statement by the NICD.
“The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (46%), followed by Western Cape (20%). Kwa-Zulu Natal accounted for 18% and Mpumalanga accounted for 5% .Eastern Cape, Free State and North West each accounted for 3% respectively. Northern Cape accounted 1% and Limpopo accounted for less than 1% of today’s new cases.”
The Institute adds that there have been two new coronavirus related deaths.
“Due to the ongoing audit exercise by the National Department of Health (NDoH), there may be a backlog of COVID-19 mortality cases reported but 2 deaths occurred in the past 24 – 48 hours leading to Monday, keeping the total fatalities to 100 052.
“There has also been an increase of 26 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.”
