Motorists set to pay even more at the pump from Wednesday
Motorists will have to budget a little more cash to pay for fuel this month.
This after the Department of Mineral Resource and Energy announced higher fuel prices for April.
Petrol and diesel will increase with 93 grade petrol set to cost 28 cents more per litre, while 95 petrol will increase by 36 cents per litre.
Diesel will cost between R1.52 and R1.68 more per litre.
The department’s spokesperson Robert Maake says the crude oil prices and trends in the exchange rate are among the reasons for the changes.
“With respect to diesel, apart from increasing crude oil prices, there is also a shortage of diesel supply which is due to lower exports from Russia as a major exporter of distillate fuel at discounted prices. That is why the rate of price increase in diesel is higher than that of petrol.”

While motorists are likely to feel the pinch again, it’s still a lot less than the earlier predicted price hikes.
It’s believed the increases in petrol would have been close to R2.00 per litre and over R3.00 per litre for diesel had it to been for government’s intervention.
But it may be little consolation for motorists who have faced rising fuel prices for the past several months.
“Due to the ongoing Russia - Ukraine conflict which has affected fuel prices globally, the Minister of Finance in consultation with the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy announced a further temporary reduction in the general fuel levy of R1.50 for the next two months from Wednesday 6 April 2022 to Tuesday 31 May 2022. The total fuel levy will now amount to 244.00 c/l for petrol and 230.00 c/l for diesel.
“This intervention will bring much needed relief to motorists because it will cushion the high fuel price increases that were anticipated this month which were as a result of the global factors.”
Illuminating paraffin will also increase by R2.66 per litre while LP Gas will retail for R2.50 more per kg.
The changes will take effect on Wednesday.
