The boy was stabbed during a fight between pupils from Sir Pierre van Ryneveld High School in Kempton Park and Sunrise Combined College on Wednesday.

He was admitted to Thembisa Hospital and died on Thursday.

Jacaranda FM News has been reliably informed that the pupil responsible for the stabbing subsequently fled to KwaZulu-Natal.

Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona says the school has also launched an investigation into the incident.

"We urge all our learners to refrain from acts of misconduct in schools and implore parents to assist the department in instilling learner discipline in and outside the school environment," says Mabona.

Meanwhile, the Foundation for Education and Social Justice Africa has called on the government to look at other ways to help end violence at schools.

Deputy Chairperson Hendrick Makaneta says the increasing levels of school violence pose a real threat to learning and teaching.

"Teachers are slowly but surely losing the plot in as far as learner discipline is concerned. It appears that today's generation of learners is becoming more and more violent despite the fact that corporal punishment has been abolished. The only way to curb school violence is for government to consider alternative ways as the current approach is not working at all.

“It can't be correct that society is fast losing confidence in public schools. Even people who struggle to make ends have lost confidence in our public schools because there is no guarantee that their loved ones will come back alive," says Makaneta.
