On Wednesday, a handful of members of the community marked their victory by doing a walkthrough at the airport, singing, and dancing while wearing their traditional gear.

In 2018, the Khoi and San tribe proposed that the airport be named after their indigenous leader.

Stuurman rebelled against the British and Dutch colonialists and served time on Robben Island before he was banished to Australia.

He died in exile in Sydney in 1830.

Khoisan activist Christian Martin believes the name change is a significant win.

He says t promotes a sense of nation-building and transformation to the people of the Khoi and San tribes.

"We are coming to say let’s restore what went wrong, and this is what we are busy doing, remember we were not a part of the truth and reconciliation process in this country, so we are grateful for this.”
